Should women change their surname after marriage ???

"Women change their surname.  Men do not.  Is this a custom or a tradition? "
 My name is Rachna Srivastava...
but now am calling by Rachna biswas after marriage...as i married to Mainak Biswas 7 years ago...
Seven years before, I used to identitfy by Rachna srivastava... my attendence register, my login ids, my copy's front page, my marksheets, my certificates, my freinds, my parents, my relatives every where i identified by this name ... and its much obvious... after my "naam-karan", I was so called by Rachna Srivastava...

Our India is bounded by so many cultures and traditions.
Changing your last name after you get married is an old tradition that has been around for a long time and i followed this tradition... but I have seen many girls who still using her maiden's surname after marriage.. but i think its individual choice.
Now a days, many woman using new technique - Wife Uses Maiden Surname as Middle Name Along With Husband's Family Name..
In Short- “trend” is the double-surnames, but I think it is not practical
for example - Rachna Srivastava Biswas... I didnt did it... coz accroding to me my maiden name "srivastava" is too long to fit in middle along with "Biswas" as it also contains 6 letter word....it becomes more complicated...
Question Arise - Why do only woman change? Why not Men ? I am not saying i did mistake. Infact I am happy. According to me , It looks really odd as someone called my husband Mr. Biswas and me "Mrs. Srivastava".....
I don’t consider myself old-fashioned either. First of all, when you become a married couple, the name change that occurs is a symbol of the couple.  It’s a symbol of your commitment to one another and to “becoming one”. Any children you have will bear that name and carry it into the future.
Recently, couple came to live in D wing in our society and they put their name plate on the door.. Now their name plate become the talking point among various neighbours... Their name plate denotes -  Sanjay Gupta and Chaaya Sinha..... Various neighbours thought they are just living togather but after that chaaya told them that - she dont want to giveup her maiden's name......Chaaya is not the only woman who want to keep her maiden name but there are more n more womens who prefer to stick to her maiden surname name.
Working women prefer to stick to her maiden surname, cos if she change so she also have to change or rebuilt all documentaion like passport, licence.. my case was different as i made all tht stuff after my marriage  :)
But some where i read this line - "Marriages can come and go, but a name change might be forever."...
So U all give input- wheather to change or not  ???

  2. hi,
My father asked me if i was going to change my name after marriage, I said NO.. and I haven't.
I very cheekily give my reason as, " I have only one father but husbands may be more than one!"

  3. I personaly dont like these type of stupidity. I feel that the name carries the identity of the person bearing that. I dont want anyone changing their name just for the sake of fitting or getting accepted by the society and if that is the case, why it is only for females? Its not that, only one gender has to show that they are married but it should ne made mandatory of both the genders to show they are married

  4. How abt Mainak changing his name to Mainak Biswas Srivastava and you changing your name to Rachna Srivastava Biswas ???

Anyway, funniest thing in Maharashtra is that, if you want to retain your surname (Srivastava in ur case), you need to publish that change of surname (from Biswas to Srivastava) through gazette Notification though there exist no documentary evidence that you had changed your surname from Srivastava to Biswas after marriage !!! really funny, isn't it ???
